Returning Swallows

LESLIE ST SPIT - APRIL 30, 2022

We’re in that time of year where every time I go to Leslie St Spit, another new arrival has returned from migration. This weekend it was the swallows. Formerly empty nests of both cliff and barn swallows are now being tended and rebuilt. It’s no surprise they’re here and active - the other clear sign of spring was the endless clouds of midges along the paths. One fringe benefit of masks being in all of our lives now.

The terns had also returned and were loudly staking out spots on  the floating platforms provided to them on the spit.

I know I’m projecting, but each time I visit, all of the wildlife seems just a little grumpier that we haven’t broken the threshold of warm weather yet. Everyone seems to ready to just GO, but the wind is still bitter and frost is still clinging to the mornings. Maybe next weekend?
