Snail Hunt
Cedar Vale Ravine - August 4, 2022
A quick trip to Cedar Vale Ravine to hunt down some grove snails. I’d kept an eye out the last few times I’d gone for a walk there, and while they were abundant, they’d never exactly been active. The difference was I was looking for them in blazing hot, sunny days. But I timed this trip for a wet, overcast evening and it made all the difference. They were out and about and seemed particularly interested in a little copse of aspen trees. I’m not sure whether they’re attracted to aspens specifically or whether that was just a congregating point for them but either way I got the footage I wanted for the future grove snails video, and only a few weird looks. A woman asked if I was doing this as part of a study, presumably the only circumstances under which she could conceive of someone willingly filming snails. I told her ‘sort of’.
